Wild by Cheryl Strayed

You know you have read a truly great book when you miss the character's like long lost friends. Now I have finished reading Wild : From Lost to Found, I admit it, I miss Cheryl Strayed.

Wild is Cheryl Strayed's first person account of her 1,100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail at the age of 26, having had no prior hiking experience.

Strayed sets out on the hike with a backpack she later nicknames "Monster" - for its ridiculous size and weight. I soon found out that she carried a lot more than excessive supplies on her shoulders.
With each twist and turn, bubbling blister and narrowly avoided rattle snake, I learnt that this was both a physical and emotional journey of self discovery.

Following the devastation of her Mother's death, Strayed turns her life upside down,
using multiple one night stands and heroin abuse to cope with her bereavement.
As a result, the marriage to her childhood sweetheart comes to an inevitable but painful end and Strayed realises that she needs to piece herself back together again. The Pacific Crest Trail beckoned.

What was so addictive about this book was its raw and gritty potrail of self healing and eventual rehabilitation. Nothing is sugar coated. In our filtered and censored world, it is pure escapism to read about someone setting off into the wild - so inexperienced and openly admitting they've got a bit lost in life.

Wild is a truly inspiring and touching adventure, capable of pricking up your inner instincts and making you realise just what you are really capable of.

There's a "hard-ass amazonian queen" waiting inside of us all, we just have to let her out now and again. Wild is a fantastic place to start.

Travelling Light

Tuesday, 10 February 2015

Sometimes it's good for you to escape with just what you need and no more. The romance of packing a single bag, locking your old life behind you and walking forward into the unknown.

I'll be honest I am a "what if ?" packer, coming up with every possible reason to justify the unnecessary, only to use a quarter of my luggage in the end. However, whilst travelling in January, I wanted to travel light, so I squeezed my life for one month within the dimensions of 23x36x56 cm, and I am officially a convert.

One area you will need to cut back on are your liquids. You need to face up to that undersized sandwich bag and reassess what you really need.

So here is my edit of the essential small things, that make a big difference:

Embryolisse Eau Lait : 75ml
This Mulit-tasking wonder should come with a mini super-hero cape in my opinion. This Make-up Artists backstage staple, can be used as a make-up remover, primer, moisturiser, mask, after sun and to soothe minor skin irritations.

Nuxe Hule Prodigieuse Golden Dry Oil: 50ml
One layer of this iconic oil and you'll be flicking your legs around the beach like the Venus Razor models, (you have been warned).
This multi tasking dry oil repairs and conditions with sweet almond, macadamia and Vitimin E to name a few of it's luxurious and natural ingredients. It can be used on your face, body, hair and even doubles up as an indulgent bath oil to release your inner golden goddess/Venus razor model with flicky legs.

Pocket Cow Bath and Body set: 30ml (x5)
Lazy Cow, Saucy Cow and Wild Cow are just some of the wonderfully naughty alter ego's you can try on for size with this travel friendly Bath and Body set from Cowshed. With everything thing you need for your travels in a handy 30ml size, these organic and natural products will not only leave you looking fabulous but feeling like a bit of a Smug Cow too.

Becca Beach Tint: 7ml
A little tube with huge talent, talent to ensure, you, yes you, can emerge from the ocean like some kind of glorious water nymph! This 2-in-1 cream stain for lips and cheeks is oil-free, streak-free and water resistant leaving you with a pretty 'flush' of natural colour, and to top it all off, each shade has a delicate fragrance according to each fruity shade! Watermelon anyone?
